Wurstküche Restaurant: Sausage Heaven

Sausage grosses a lot of people out, and I'm not gonna say that I have always been sausage's #1 fan, but Wurstküche rocked my socks off. There are so many different sausages, the pickiest eater can find something they love - even retarded vegetarians who accidentally stumble into a sausage restaurant. Since I insist upon proving how tough I am at every meal, I opted for one of the spiciest sausages: the turkey with jack cheese and jalapeño, topped with spicy peppers and carmelized onions. We also shared the fries with truffle oil and the chipotle ketchup (my heaven). Perhaps the best part of my lunch, however, was discovering that Wurstküche carries my favorite beer, Fruli, on their extensive beer menu! Fruli is an awesome Belgian strawberry fruit beer that is 70% beer/30% juice, but still contains an approximate 5% alcohol content. It's healthy and it gets you drunk! Like a bloody mary! In summary: great sausage + beer selection. Next time I come back, I will have 10 of both.

Breakfast at Delilah's in Echo Park

On Saturday morning we woke up super early and went for breakfast at Delilah's, which is right up the street from our house. I'd never been there before and wasn't expecting much of it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Delilah's is pretty much one of the cutest little places I've ever been, with shabby chic decor and yummy looking cupcakes and other baked goods of all colors. I realized once I got there that I shouldn't have bought my lame Arizona green tea because they had a broad selection, but it was too late. I did try Alex's cherry lemonade, which, even though I really hate cherry-flavored things, was absolutely delicious (probably because it was basically liquid sugar). While the lunch sandwich menu looked appealing (and I am a sucker for cold cuts, even at 9am), I decided to stick to breakfast and order their veggie scramble omelet, with spinach, red pepper, onion and mushroom.



Everyone who knows me, knows I am not big on the veggies, but I was feeling an exceptional need to "anti-oxidize" for reasons that will remain unmentioned on this blog, and decided to go for it since the menu also said GOAT CHEESE and PESTO. The omelet was great and I loved that the homefries were actual recognizable potato slices, not a pile of fried mush. Plus, I couldn't finish it. Bravo. OH and did I mention that every table is served a basket of FREE MUFFIN SAMPLES while you wait for your food?! Wahoo!



Alex, of course, ordered his usual bacon and eggs. The bacon was extra thick and yummy, which, the owner explained to us, was because Delilah's gets all their ingredients directly from the farm, therefore they get a lot of say in how their food is prepared from the first step. That's right, the owner was actually working and conversing with patrons. Gotta love that!

I can't believe I went so long without eating at Delilah's, but I am so stoked I finally did, and can't wait to go back for lunch!

Healthy(er) Chicken Fried Rice with "Chow Mein"

I love getting chow mein AND fried rice at my many hungover visits to Panda Express. I had some left-over, pre-cooked, extra thin rice noodles (from A-Grocery, the awesome Asian market on Sunset + Laveta) and I wanted to use them so they wouldn't go to waste. So, I figured, why not try to fry em up into chow mein or worst case scenario, crunchy noodles. Combining them with chicken fried rice was a no-brainer, since I probably wouldn't mess that part up, and we could potentially completely recreate my entire fried Chinese hangover dream. Plus, making it at home gives me the option of using brown rice instead of white, high-fiber rice noodles instead of nutritionally-void ramen, and olive oil instead of... God knows what. See recipe below.

Ingredients:

Chicken Fried Rice:
4 oz chicken breast tenderloins
1/4 cup green onion
1/4 red onion
1 cup cooked brown rice
1 egg
olive oil
soy sauce
black pepper

"Chow Mein":
3/4 cup cooked thin rice noodles
1 tbsp butter

Beat egg in a bowl, cook in skillet with a bit of olive oil to prevent sticking. Allow egg to cook through without scrambling or flipping. Once egg is cooked, shred and place aside.

In skillet, combine chicken and onions (and a touch of olive oil). Shred chicken as it cooks.

In separate skillet, combine cooked, thin rice noodles and butter. Cook over high heat to fry the noodles. If some get a bit crispy, it's okay. I think they taste good that way!

After chicken is cooked, add the brown rice. Add soy sauce and black pepper to taste. Then, add the egg into the stir fry.

Once the rice noodles are fried up, you can add them into the fried rice mixture, or serve them on the side.

Pancakes are hard to make and only kinda worth it.





We made Hungry Jack "wheat" pancakes for breakfast today. Pancakes always seem like a good idea until you make the first four, realize you won't eat more than that, and still have 3/4 of the batter and another hour of cooking left. Wahh. They were delicious, though, covered in butter and organic maple syrup (no high fructose corn syrup in this house, oh hell no), and with bacon and scrambied eggs. Party on pancake breakfast.

Turkey Reuben @ Du-par's in the Grove

I am very picky with my turkey, but this sangwich killed it. I got it with mashed potatoes instead of fries, no questions asked. My waiter seemed like he may have been coming off a 12 hour shift (Du-par's is open 24 hours), or maybe he was just a soulless wannabe model, but nonetheless the food was bangin. I wish I lived closer to the Grove so I could hit up Du-par's afterhours. On second thought, I would never want to live by the Grove, but I wish Du-par's would open a second location on the East Side! Shit's delicious.
